Welcome to the first edition of The Florida Bell! I am thrilled to be launching this new media business. My goal is to provide insight and value for you, our community. Please send back any comments or questions - your engagement is important to us. Letβs jump right in:
How Can I Help?
On December 4th, 2020, Miamiβs Mayor Francis Suarez hit send on a tweet that reverberated through the Technology community on Twitter. Throughout much of December (and now January), tech firm executives, Venture Capitalists, and startup founders marveled at the concept of an elected leader that is supportive of business. Since then, Mayor Suarez has done a good job of capitalizing on the torrent of attention by engaging with everyone interested in WFH in Miami or relocating their businesses to the 305.
The Bellβs take: Residents in Miami (and around the South Florida MSA & State) benefit when elected leaders prioritize smart economic growth. Recruiting companies awash in intellectual capital is the right move for 21st century growth. To the world, Miami is βOpen for Business.β This branding and PR is worth its weight in gold (er - should we say, Bitcoin). Keep it up, Mayor.
Letting the People Decide
Your eyes do not deceive you - there is a considerable uptick in vehicles with New York state license plates driving around Florida. While the rest of the country (and world) are going through another lockdown with no end in sight, Florida is as open as sensibly possible. On September 25th 2020, Governor DeSantis removed restrictions and lifted coronavirus bans letting owners operate with reasonable safety precautions. Floridaβs openness has accelerated the existing trend of attracting talent and families to become residents of the State, especially now during the best weather months. (NY Post: Florida puts NY to shame with rational pandemic policies).
The Bellβs take: The best news is that small businesses & retail businesses can still operate. Our hearts go out to restauranteurs, small businesses, and retail business owners around the country and world that continue to get throttled by government mandated lockdowns. At least Florida gives these small businesses a fighting chance to weather the pandemic caused storm. We continue to believe that the vast majority of people are smart enough to make their own decisions during this trying time and we support letting the people decide.
